Blue Onion Dome: A Symbol of Coltsville

You will recognize the Coltsville National Park in Hartford for its blue onion dome. This little blue dome is nestled among the skyscrapers of the Hartford skyline. This monument has been a part of the Hartford, CT skyline since 1855 and sits on top of what was previously Colt’s Patent Fire-Arms Manufacturing Company. So this blue dome is a reminder of Samuel Colt, his family and factory, and their contributions to the industry of precision manufacturing in not only Hartford, but around the world.

About Samuel Colt & His Legacy

Samuel Colt lived from 1814-1862. He is one of the nation’s early innovators in precision manufacturing and the production of firearms. It is also the site of important contributions to manufacturing technology made by Colt and the ensuing industrial enterprise he created.

When you visit Coltsville, you’ll see a cohesive and readily identifiable 260-acre area. This area was originally listed as the Colt Industrial District on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. It was later designated a National Historic Landmark in 2008 and then eventually a National Historic Park in 2014. After a two decade-long campaign in Hartford to have this area join the national parks nationwide, President Barack Obama signed the famous bill. This bill authorized the Coltsville National Historic Park.
